Privacy Policy

The short version: VidBoards is a local desktop application. It does not have a backend and does not collect, transmit, or store any of your personal data or files. Starting with v1.1, the app makes one outbound request to GitHub on startup to check for updates — no personal data is sent, but your IP is visible to GitHub as with any HTTPS request. This privacy policy exists to make that crystal clear.

1. Who We Are

VidBoards ("we", "us", "our") is a desktop software project that provides the VidBoards application — a free-form canvas for organizing AI-generated video and image files. The application is available at vidboards.app.

This Privacy Policy explains what information, if any, is collected when you use VidBoards, how it is used, and your rights in relation to it.

2. Information We Do NOT Collect

VidBoards is a locally-installed desktop application. It operates entirely on your device and has no server-side component. Specifically, we do not collect:

  • Your files: Videos, images, or any media files you open in VidBoards never leave your computer
  • Project data: Your .vdb project files are stored locally by you in your Documents folder and are never transmitted
  • Usage data: We do not track which features you use, how long you use the app, or any behavioral data
  • Crash reports: If the application crashes, no automatic crash report is sent to us
  • Personal identifiers: Name, email address, IP address, device ID — none of this is collected
  • Location data: We have no access to your location
  • Metadata from files: File metadata is read locally to display in the app and is never transmitted

3. Information Stored Locally on Your Device

VidBoards stores the following data locally on your device only:

  • Project files (.vdb): Saved in ~/Documents/VidBoards/. These contain card positions, labels, color tags, and file references (not file contents).
  • Trash metadata: Deleted project files are moved to ~/Documents/VidBoards/.trash/ and retained for 30 days before automatic deletion.
  • App preferences: Settings such as theme (dark/light), language, and similar UI preferences may be stored locally in the app's user data directory managed by Electron.

All of this data lives exclusively on your machine. We have no access to it.

4. Network Activity

VidBoards makes a limited, automatic network request described below. No personal data is collected or transmitted by VidBoards itself.

  • Automatic update check (v1.1+): Once at startup, VidBoards contacts GitHub Releases (github.com/KuzmaBogdanov/vidBoards) to check whether a newer version is available. This request contains no personal data from VidBoards — however, as with any HTTPS request, GitHub's servers may log your IP address, user agent (which includes the app version and OS), and timestamp. This data is processed by GitHub under their own Privacy Statement. The update is never downloaded or installed without your explicit confirmation.
  • External links: When you click a link that opens in your system browser (e.g., a link to this website, a GitHub page, or a donation platform), your browser connects to that external site. This is standard browser behavior and is not controlled by VidBoards.
  • Future features: Any future feature involving additional network communication beyond the update check described above will be clearly disclosed in an updated Privacy Policy before release.

5. This Website (vidboards.app)

This website is separate from the VidBoards desktop application. When you visit vidboards.app, standard web server logs may record your IP address, browser type, referrer URL, and access timestamps. This is standard practice for web servers and is used solely for security and operational purposes.

We do not use cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics scripts on this website beyond what may be inherent in our hosting infrastructure.

6. Third-Party Services

GitHub — VidBoards is distributed via GitHub Releases and uses GitHub's infrastructure for update delivery. When the app checks for updates, GitHub may process your IP address and user agent per their Privacy Statement. VidBoards has no access to any data GitHub may collect.

VidBoards may also link to donation/support platforms (e.g., DonationAlerts, cryptocurrency networks). These are entirely optional, require your active participation, and are governed by the privacy policies of those respective platforms. We have no control over and no access to data you share with them.

The desktop application does not embed any third-party tracking, advertising, or analytics SDKs.

7. Children's Privacy

VidBoards is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the EU/EEA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Since we collect no personal information at all, children's use of the application does not create any data concern on our end. However, parents should supervise their children's use of any software that can open and display arbitrary media files.

8. Your Rights

Because we collect no personal data about you, there is no personal data for us to provide, correct, or delete. However, if you believe we have inadvertently collected personal information about you, or if you have any questions or concerns, please contact us and we will address your request promptly.

For users in the European Economic Area (EEA): To the extent any personal data is processed (e.g., through this website's server logs), the lawful basis is our legitimate interest in operating a secure and functional website (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). You have the right to object to such processing. Contact us to exercise your rights.

9. Data Security

Since your data never leaves your device, the security of your VidBoards project files depends on the security of your own system. We recommend standard security practices: keeping your operating system updated, using antivirus software, and maintaining backups of important files.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the application evolves, particularly if we introduce any features that involve network communication. We will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, notify users via the application or website.

We will never introduce data collection features without giving you clear notice and, where required by law, your consent.
